board games

Whether it is sunny or cold, board games can keep a company busy and transform a dull or not so special evening to a competition for people with strong nerves. Last time my friends and I decided to play a board game, we all had such a lovely time that we forgot what time it was up until one of my friends pointed out that the sun was rising! It is true that it a board game is exciting and the teams are willing to invest time in finding the best strategy so as to win their opponents, a game can have a long duration, before someone looses or quits. But what exactly is a board game and why do board games have had such a success?

A board game is any game played on a board, which is represented by a marked surface, with counters or pieces that are placed on, removed from, or moved across this board. But although board games are considered as simple family entertainment, there are many different types and classifications of board games, created as simplified simulations of real life or on the contrary do not attempt to imitate reality. One example from each category is Monopoly, for instance, since it is a game where one can buy or sell property, resembling the real estate market, while Trivial Pursuit is a trivia game, examining the players' knowledge-base on a variety of categories.

Probably you and I have played board games inherited from ancient cultures and societies. Evidence reveals that board games were played since 3,500 BC in Egypt, while the Royal Tombs of Ur contained, among other things, the Royal Game of Ur. But even though taking my favorite board game with me is a thought I should consider at some point, since I still belong to the living side for the river of life, I should probably continue to have fun and invite friends over to play board games and learn something new.

It is worth noting at this point, that the board game industry is a rather competitive one, this comes as no surprise, full of corporate mergers and acquisitions. Hasbro, one of the biggest companies worldwide owns a variety of games and sells them under different brand names to its operating markets since it is extremely difficult finding a global name and strategy and promoting the game with the use of the same message to all customers trying to cover their similar needs.

Finally, it is important to know that board games are distinguished between the ones which are based on luck and those that based on strategy. But the truth is that some games include both elements and it is not advisable to classify them according to the one and not the other feature. Just play them!

Online Board Games.(board games)

board games

Online board games are, as the term suggests, games played over the Internet either alone or with various people. Many of these games are the board games we used sit around a table and play with our family and friends. The only difference is now, we have no physical contact with the people we play with, nor can we see them. Additionally, we probably do not, nor will we ever, know our partners and opponents. Although, many game rooms offer a “chat” option as well.

With a few exceptions, online board games are free, and there are millions of people playing different board games online at any given time. This favors anyone who wants to play at any time because you are always guaranteed to find people who are willing to play the same game you are interested in.

Additionally, when playing online you can try any type of game you want without purchasing it. As noted, many are free, and many also offer a free “trial” period to allow you the option playing the game for a while before deciding whether you want to purchase it or not. This means that you can test literally all board games online without spending any money at all or give it a ‘test-drive’ before you consider buying. This is a huge advantage if you are a big fan of board games, since you can always expand the range of games that you like to play.

Finally, because you are playing over the Internet, you can definitely find some of the most challenging opponents to play with. Some games include a ranking system for all players who compete. If you rank high, you will be listed as a top player and could win some very nice prizes. Two of the most popular free, game websites) are MSN and Yahoo. Have fun and enjoy the games!

board games

A board game is any type of game that is played on a marked surface (board). In addition to the board, there are usually pieces that are used to move across the board in various ways, depending on the game being played. There are literally thousands of board games. Some are simple and considered family entertainment, while others are intricate and involve a plan or strategy in order to win.

Although board games have been played in most cultures since the earliest civilizations, they became widely popular during the early 20th century with the rise of the middle class who had time to spend and money to burn. Board games can be described in two basic categories – luck and strategy. Most children’s games like Candy Land and Chutes and Ladders are based on luck. Games like Monopoly and Risk are based on both luck and strategy. For example, in Monopoly you wish for luck when you shake the dice to land on a good piece of property for sale. Then you must think strategically to decide whether or not it is worth purchasing or investing more money in. Chess, on the other hand, is a game of pure strategy.

There is also a certain amount of diplomacy involved in many board games. Games involving three or more players can involve diplomacy whereby players convince other players to team up with them, make deals, etc.

Many board games are now being replaced with computer games. For example, the option to play Scrabble online and compete with other players is a popular example. There are hundreds of sites that offer hundreds of board games for young and old alike. As a matter of fact, the success of online computer games has led to a serious decline in board game sales.
